We can’t contain our jealousy of Elena Gilbert (played by the beautiful Nina Dobrev) any longer. She’s got two extremely attractive vampires, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), fighting over her, her hair is unbelievably glossy and she has a wardrobe to die for. We’ve noticed she has a particular love of jackets – from her leather bomber to her cute denim number.
Based on the successful book series of the same name by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries follows Elena as she meets and falls for the good vampire Stefan (yes, we know it sounds a lot like Twilight). But his brother Damon isn’t quite so nice and, although being attracted by his bad boy image, Elena must stop him from bringing back an ancient vamp named Katherine, who happens to look a hell of a lot like her. Along with her best friend Bonnie (Katerina Graham), who just happens to be a witch, Elena has to struggle her way through high school in the fictional town of Mystic Falls while dealing with all kinds of supernatural problems.
Somehow she still manages to look pretty much perfect all the time, bar a couple of scrapes and bruises. And this is mostly down to costume designer Jennifer Bryan, who started out on Broadway and due to her attention to detail has worked on films like Goodfella’s. With The Vampire Diaries she gets to mix young modern outfits and period costumes, putting her talents to good use. She says her: “designs and costumes for the actors are definitely driven by the character that each actors plays. The clothes shouldn’t distract you but subliminally reinforce the character for both the actor and the viewer.”
For Elena specifically, Jennifer says she likes to: “keep her look clean and simple; jeans and a scoop neck top is something I like put her in.” Elena does favour the jeans, t-shirt and jacket look and since it suits her so much we say keep it up – you can’t be worrying about fancy skirts and shoes when you’re running around after hot vamps! One jacket in particular caught our eye – the classic True Religion Emily denim jacket, to which she added some extra cool by layering it over a purple Free People Zipper Sleeve thermal top. We love Elena’s casual style so we’ve found the original denim jacket and some great lookalikes so you can recreate her laid back look.
Should Elena stay with Stefan or get with Damon?
