Oh Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), will you ever learn? First you screw up Nate and Blair’s (Chace Crawford and Leighton Meester) relationship, then along comes Dan (Penn Badgley) and everything seems like it’s going to be ok – but of course it’s not. Next there’s a short fling with Aaron Rose, the scheming Gabriel and ‘helpful’ Carter Baisen. Luckily Nate’s on hand to to put up with Serena’s crazy ways, until she decides to find her deadbeat dad (William Baldwin) and mess up Rufus and Lily’s marriage. A lot has happened in three seasons.
The Gossip Girl’s have left Constance Billard and moved on to college, and their clothes have grown up with them. While Blair is hanging on to her hair bands, Serena’s hemlines have slowly moved up her legs. But now her partying days are over and she’s concentrating on impressing her father. Costume designer Eric Daman knows how important the costumes in Gossip Girl are, and how “the costumes are helping the characters evolve.”
Daman says: “From a fashion standpoint, Serena is in a little bit of an identity crisis. Serena in Season 2 was that tosseled Kate Moss ‘I don’t really care – I’ll just throw on my tank top, my slinky cardigan, my giant bag and I’m off and I look great.’” And she does look great, annoyingly all the time!
Since the season three finale airs tonight (and we cannot wait) we’re looking back at Serena’s fashions, particularly episode one. “For the beginning of this [season] we are trying to set up this kind of idea where she’s kinda the pre-Serena – the old party girl Serena – that girl that kind of overdoes it a little bit and is trying to get attention through her clothing and draw attention to herself,” Daman explains.
Well she’s certainly got our attention, particularly in a gorgeous grey silky romper and beautiful blazer. Daman says he: “saw the blazer in the store on a mannequin and fell in love with it. It kind of embodies everything I wanted. The slim fit makes it more feminine and it adds a twist when it’s added to a silk romper like that.” Plus the floral fabric is perfect for summer, great to throw on over a cute dress or playsuit in the evenings.
Daman thinks Gossip Girl is “about making fashion accessible to every girl,” and we’re doing just that by finding you affordable alternatives to Serena’s Dries Van Noten Blazer. Whether you’re looking for bright colours or more muted tones, we’ve found some gorgeous floral blazers to suit Serena.
