In the age of CGI and 3D cinema, it might seem that traditional 2D animation is dead. In fact Disney itself announced that it would be moving toward computer-generated animations over the traditional form back in 2003. This was due to relatively unsuccessful films Treasure Planet and Brother Bear, which were released around the same time as DreamWorks’ Shrek and Pixar’s Finding Nemo – both of which were massive box office hits. So, is proper animation dead to Disney?
John Lasseter disagrees, saying: “I’ve never understood why the studios were saying people don’t want to see hand-drawn animation. What people don’t want to watch is a bad movie.” And h’s certainly in a good place to argue, since he and Ed Catmull are the Pixar cofounders who have been running Disney animation since 2006. Last year Lasseter’s point was proven when Disney released The Princess and the Frog – a first in many ways being the first traditional animation from Disney in almost six years and the first to feature a black princess.
And the return to tradition was a success for nostalgic adults and new Disney fans alike. It saw a return to talking animals, true love and characters breaking into song frequently (something we’ve become used thanks to Glee). It also made us realise just how much we missed our House of Mouse classics, as we dusted off the videos and sat down for a princess-fest. The reminder of being a child when watching Disney classic animations almost makes you forget just how old these films are, with the oldest Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs released in 1937.
Whether you remember the release of these classics or reminisce over watching them over and over again as a child – we all love a bit of nostalgia. So to top in to that love for all things Disney we’ve searched the net for the coolest t-shirts out there. Our favourites have to be the Cinderella ‘Rags to Riches’ tee, or the neon Ariel from The Little Mermaid one. Snap up a cute Disney tee just in time for summer.
