Back in 1992 Fox launched a series called Melrose Place which followed a bunch of young, beautiful people living in a West Hollywood apartment complex and following their dreams. As part of the Beverley Hills, 90210 franchise it was a huge success, running for seven seasons until 1999. it won the ‘Favorite Television Series’ People’s Choice Award and it’s cast were nominated for several Golden Globes. All of these factors made it no surprise that in 2009 The CW launched their reboot of the series of the same name.
But viewers got a shock in the pilot episode when they saw a middle aged Sydney Andrews (Laura Leighton), who died in a car accident on her wedding day back in 1997, looking alive and very well. That was until she was found floating in the complex pool ten minutes later.
What started looking a lot like the original series suddenly turned into a murder mystery, with almost all the new characters under interrogation. And while other characters have made guest appearances we’ve found the new ones just as interesting. Our, and it seems most peoples, favourite is definitely Ella Simms, played by Katie Cassidy (you might recognise her as Ruby in Supernatural or Trish in Harper’s Island).
The creators of the rebooted series, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, used the death as both a hook for new viewers and a reference to the original series when Kimberly Shaw (Marcia Cross) returned from the dead. They were also attracted by the effect it would have on viewers, Slavkin explains: "What was so important to us about Sydney’s death in the first 10 minutes is that it means anything could happen. And that appeals to us as well as it saying that this is our own thing. It will feel nostalgic, but it’s not the old ‘Melrose.’ "
Ella is just the right balance of character traits, meaning you either love her or hate her. Due to their fight over Ella exposing her affairs, she becomes the prime suspect in Sydney’s murder. Despite this Ella seems to be doing well at WPK, until Amanda (Heather Locklear) returns and makes it very clear she’ll be out of a job until if anything goes wrong at an event. It was in this episode we spotted Ella wearing a gorgeous Black Halo strapless jumpsuit in a deep purple colour.
While the actual is sold out almost everywhere (we’ve found one on eBay) jumpsuits are the perfect outfit for cooler summer days or evenings. We’ve found some great strapless jumpsuits to rival Ella’s, so grab yours now for an easy all-in-one outfit. Accessorise with a big belt, necklace and heels and head to 4616 Melrose Place.
Ella is a love-or-hate character, so which are you?
