The soundtrack to the first Sex and the City movie was surprisingly good. With great tracks from everyone from Fergie to Nina Simone to co-star Jennifer Hudson, it was a great mix of fun sounds and emotional songs. And when we saw the first trailer for the sequel, featuring Empire State of Mind, we knew the second film would bring us another great summer soundtrack. Along with the trailer track, Alicia Keys adds a cover of Blondie’s awesome Rapture to the soundtrack, mixing the old and new by adding in notes from the original series’ theme song.
Also featured on the trailer is Ricki-Lee’s girl-power filled Can’t Touch It, which sums up the four Sex friends pretty well. Jennifer Hudson returns for the second soundtrack (she’s not in the movie), this time collaborating with Leona Lewis. Their track Love is Your Colour is a beautiful song with strong lyrics from two strong ladies. The lyrics sound vaguely familiar until you hear Cyndi Lauper’s True Colours, also featured in the listing, and it all becomes clear.
Another lady making a return is Dido with her dancey track Everything To Lose, along with Erykah Badu with the lovely Window Seat. Added to this mix of classics and pop songs are a couple of more exotic sounding tracks to reflect the girls’ trip from Natacha Atlas and Cee-Lo. And from the wedding scene there are some fantastic songs from the Sex and the City Men’s Choir including If Ever I Would Leave You and Till There Was You.
But for comedy there are a couple of tracks that have had us in stitches. First up and also from the wedding scene is Liza Minnelli’s bizarre and hilarious cover of Beyonce’s Single Ladies! On filming the sequence she says: “It’s rock and roll. Everything is moving! And I just got a whole new knee, so I can promise you everything is moving!” There’s also a karaoke number from our favourite four; Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). While on a girly getaway to Abu Dhabi they belt out a (surprisingly) good version of the Helen Reddy classic I Am Woman.
By now most of us have seen the film, so why not pick up the soundtrack (and some of the fashion) now to relive the glamour all summer.
